I think it depends on what insect you look at, any insect could carry a desiese, though this happens, humans are the cause as well, for insects carrying deseases by throwing trash out into land fills and such.

to get the energy they need, when plants are in seeds, they feed off of the oil within the seed, when they are out of the seed, they need more than one way to gain energy like photosynthesis

It depends on how much movement you are talking about... if they are moving slowly then they are using less eich means the method you are talking about could work
