You can't make a dog "immune to toxins" by giving them chocolate as a puppy. Please do not feed chocolate to dogs.

I know this post is old, but...there are other characteristics besides the presence of a nucleus which are used to make this determination. Eukaryotes and Archeae share genes that are not found in true bacteria, for instance. Multiple lines of evidence point to an earlier branching between eukaryote...

This is probably too late to help you with your paper, but the terms beneficial , detrimental and neutral refer to the effect the mutation has on the organism's success in reproducing. Since you generally have to be alive to reproduce, most traits that are positively selected have some impact on sur...

Think of it this way: Taking care of our children ensures that our genes get passed on and so is advantageous. It serves an evolutionary purpose. But is that why we take of our children? He knew only that the child was his warrant. He said: If he is not the word of God, God never spoke. Darwin is re...

These ideas of wants, desires and competitions are just metaphors for natural consequences. Obviously a gene can't actually want anything. What Dawkins describes in that book is a chain of cause and effect. Genes that have certain characteristics are more likely to propagate than other genes without...

Props to the OP for a thought-provoking post. I'm not sure what to think. I have always thought that cognition was the key advantage that allowed humans to basically (for a geological eyeblink) dominate the planet, but the sad fate of our near relatives does demand an explanation. And then there is ...
