If we take replication to mean a living entity making a copy of itself, then this, to me, is life, and so must necessarily have been around since the beginning, with metabolism coming later, as organisms developed.
I've read that in an ambiguously-written article that human DNA consists of c. 3 billion base pairs. Anyone happen to know if this refers to just the coding portions or if it's the total aggregate of the DNA, including non-coding portions? Thanks.
