... think they were killing the bacteria, whilst they actually only prevented their growth - because the effect looks the same when you put the discs on the agar right after inoculation ;) After all, as far as I know most of the common household disinfectants are fairly weak, and many bacteria ...

The null hypothesis here, is the assertion that the mean diameter of the experimental discs is the same as the mean diameter of the control discs. The only things you “put in” are the means and standard deviations of the two groups when you calculate the t-statistic ...
