Suffix

1. A letter, letters, syllable, or syllables added or appended to the end of a word or a root to modify the meaning; a postfix.

2. (Science: mathematics) A subscript mark, number, or letter. See subscript.

Origin: L. Suffixus, p.p. Of suffigere to fasten on, to affix; sub under _ figere to fix: cf. F. Suffixe. See fix.

dehydration and hydrolysis reactions

Let me clarify my response, nomenclature is like one of the hardest things in organic chemistry simply by the sheer amount of rules prefixes, suffixes etc..
