rutile

(Science: chemical) A mineral usually of a reddish brown colour, and brilliant metallic adamantine luster, occurring in tetragonal crystals. In composition it is titanium dioxide, like octahedrite and brooklite.

Origin: L. Rutilus red, inclining to golden yellow.
