Respiratory chain

Definition

noun

A chain or series of redox reactions in cellular respiration wherein the transfer of electrons from an electron donor to an electron acceptor is coupled with the transport of protons across a membrane to generate a proton gradient that drives ATP synthesis.


Supplement

The site of respiratory chain in eukaryotes is the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. In prokaryotes, it is found in the cytoplasmic membrane itself.
