radioactive decay

(Science: physics) The process by which a spontaneous change in nuclear state takes place. This process is accompanied by the emission of energy in various specific combinations of electromagnetic and corpuscular radiation and neutrinos. The spontaneous disintegration of a radioactive substance along with the emission of ionizing radiation.

Question about Carbon 14

Radioactive isotopes (such as C14) usually have too many neutrons relative to the number of ... and so have a hard time holding their nuclear particles together. The rate at which they decay is variable but usually gets faster as the atom gets larger. Atoms with a more "balanced" ...

Re: disintegrations per minute

The dpm are the disintegrations per minute your detector sees due to the decay of the radioactive label present in the assay tube. From the sounds of it, you are being asked to ...

Re: isotope labelling of cells?

One can also label cell surface antigens with radioactively labelled antibodies, although enzymatic labels have largely replaced ... dna and this can be measured with scintillation counters that measure beta decay. Tritium is a weak radiation source and thus fairly safe to use, yet reliable ...
