1. (Science: anatomy) The hair which appears upon the lower part of the hypogastric region at the age of puberty. Hence (as more commonly used), the lower part of the hypogastric region; the pubic region.

2. (Science: botany) The down of plants; a downy or villous substance which grows on plants; pubescence.

Origin: L, the hair which appears on the body at puberty, from pubes adult.

I don't know about the skin burns thing. Evolution process is a long process and the only thing I could think of that pubes would resist friction from is pants, and clothing hasn't been around that long. I would say it functions as a scent collector which makes it a lot easier for ...
