psyllium

(Science: chemical) Dried, ripe seeds of plantago psyllium, p. Indica, and p. Ovata (plantaginaceae). Plantain seeds swell in water and are used as demulcents and bulk laxatives.

Pharmacological action: cathartic.

Chemical name: Psyllium gum
