Photosystem II

Definition

noun

The photosystem that absorbs light for use to drive the oxidation of water and the reduction of plastoquinone, and whose reaction center chlorophyll is P680.

Supplement

Photosystem II is named as such since it is discovered after photosystem I. Their names do not represent the electron flow as it begins in photosystem II I (i.e. when both of them are present in the organism, e.g plants and algae). When photosystem II releases an excited electron, it returns to its ground state by accepting an electron from the oxidation of water molecule whereas photosystem I receives its electron from the electron transport chain, which in turn received an electron from photosystem II.

Abbreviation: PS II

Compare: photosystem I

Photosynthesis question

... if you did look it up, you could easily find your answers. lights at frequencies of 680 and 700 are best for chlorophylls a and b, hence the names photosystem I and II (P700 and p680), had you the time to look them up. and as for this question.... you are correct, which I thought, but verified ...

Does anything affect absorption spectrum of chlorophyll?

... you look into molecular orbitals, HOMO-LUMO, quantum mechanics and all that jazz. but the long story made short is that because chl is in a photosystem complexed with proteins and other molecules rather than in solution, it has very different behaviours. think of it: chl a in photosystem ...

Photosynthesis question

... for your response!!!!!!!!!!! :) so my textbook was wrong???????? oh well... :( wait! The wiki says that the OEC (oxygen evolving complex - part of photosystem II - the same complex that does photolysis, is an enzyme). I think I get it now. Thanks for everyone who replied!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Electrons in photosystem II

I've never heard of PS11. It is probably a misspelling of PSII(photosystem II).
