Hyperemesis gravidarum

(Science: obstetrics) a condition commonly seen in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy that is characterised by episodic vomiting, more pronounced in the morning.

Thought to be secondary to a high level of human chorionic gonadotrophin in the bloodstream (which is normal in the first trimester).

Synonym: morning sickness.
