agents employed in the preparation of histologic or pathologic specimens for the purpose of maintaining the existing form and structure of all of the constituent elements. Great numbers of different agents are used; some are also decalcifying and hardening agents. They must quickly kill and coagulate living tissue.

how does formalin compare to wardsafe or carasafe?

Fixation involves the chemical alteration of protein to prevent breakdown. Dilute formalin solutions are most effective as fixatives. Preservation is the process of maintaining the state of fixation. Formalin-free "holding solutions" like WardSafe are good for preservation.
