(Science: zoology) Any whale of the genera Sibbaldius, Balaenoptera, and allied genera, of the family Balaenopteridae, characterised by a prominent fin on the back. The common finbacks of the new England coast are Sibbaldius tectirostris and s. Tuberosus.
