Heterocyclic hydrocarbons present as trace contaminants in herbicides, especially the chlorinated dioxin 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (tetrachlorobenzodioxin). Many dioxins are teratogenic and carcinogenic.
