Are organisms algorithms?

Post by joneall » Wed Sep 12, 2018 6:28 am

Yuval Noah Harari (a historian, not a biologist) claims repeatedly in his book, "Homo deus": "Science is converging on an all-encompassing dogma, which says that organisms are algorithms and life is data processing." From this, he suggests that further evolution may reduce humans to the current status of animals as something else takes over.

As a former physicist, I am convinced this is not true for physics and I have not heard it mentioned in my studies of biology. To what degree might it be so?

I don't mean to launch literary criticism, I am only interested in this one rather precise assertion. Thanks in advance for your help.
