Oligodendrocytes.

Postby danapeso on Sun Mar 16, 2008 7:35 pm

Hello,
I have a Q about the function of oligodendrocytes.
I understand that they create an insulating layer (consisting of myelin) around the neurons in the CNS.
What I can't understand is how come, if it is an insulating layer, it speeds up the transmission of neural impulses??

Thank you for your help,
Dana.
