How does acid kill bacteria and virus?

How does acid kill bacteria and virus?

How exactly does the gastric acid kill the baceteria and virus which enter the body? I presume that they enter the cells and denature the proteins (via salt bridge formation), but does anyone have any more detail on the actual proteins denatured in both bacteria and viruses?

i'm guessing most proteins get denatured at pH=2...
