I've been trying to find information about how the structural differences in hemoglobin in individuals affect with sickle cell prevent infection by Plasmodium. But I'm not really finding any information that actually provides a clear correlation between the structural change and the reason for the inability of infection. If someone could give me a pointer in the right direction or has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

As the cell sickles, less surface area for oxygen to bind--less nutrients.

Sickled cells are also interpreted as defective / worn out and broken down for recycling, killing the parasites inside.
