why is green photosynthesis so dominant?

I wonder if we could engineer a black plant that could absorb more of the suns energy. A good thing for a science fiction book, one where a nuclear winter blocks the sun or something :P

It isn't just the color - you'd need a pigment (or set of pigments) that could absorb the frequencies that now reflect and then use those frequencies to feed electrons into photosynthesis. Not just a matter of getting a new color.

Well obviously, what I'm talking about is why don't we engineer plants to contain the black pigment needed to collect more energy...I think you missed my point entirely :P Anyone else ever heard of something like this? I'm sure someones had to have thought of it before and might even be taking steps to make it a reality. Anyone have any idea why this hasn't naturally evolved in nature?
