When I joined I had an understanding problem with a Southern-Blot task and I couldn't find a clue anywhere, not in the Internet, in no textbook, and no one could tell me. I've been helped here and have become an active forum member since then.

What's the big deal with students asking homework questions? I see your point, however, I do not agree with it 100%. First of all, if you really do not want to give them a direct answer, then just give them hints or tell them where they could find it. Also, it does not really matter if we give them answers or if Google does. They are getting the same info either way. If you say we are doing their homework, then isn't Google doing it as well? Sure there is more work and time involved in a Google search, but don't people ask their parents for homework help? I mean, they are looking for an answer whether it is here, parents, teachers or Google.

I think that you could seriously lighten up with them. You sound very harsh and somewhat insulting when you talk about them. They are only looking for help. Aside from the mean ones, they are not intending to harm you at all.

I don't students legitimately asking for help are the problem here.

I think it's when a student posts something like this:

*long list of questions obviously copied word for word from homework*

"i need these answers by tomorrow, the assignment is due!!!" (sometimes in CAPS)

The point is, student are given homework for a reason, to learn, and to understand concepts. If they come on here and ask a list of questions and get only an answer they need, do you really think they will read it over, and try to understand it themselves? I don't.

We don't mind helping with the understanding part, but a student needs to learn and read. If there's something that needs to be explained in greater detail, I've never seen someone unwilling to help.

Also many of the questions are very simple concepts that are easily found in a textbook, Google, wikipedia, tutorials, etc. If they would only read a little bit, it would make sense, and then come test time, they will know concepts, instead of just simple answers.

I think this is roughly the opinion of the mods here. It's what I've interpreted from them, hope this helps.

That is why you explain th answer to them. Even if it is a list of questions. Make sure you give it to them in a way that will help them understand the concept.

Can we have seperate topic just for homework questions so that all of the new posts about homework will be moved there and not clutter up rest of forum?

The most of the posts about homework can be solved using Google and Wikipedia. These lazy students...
