Genetic MutationI'm doing a science report on genetic mutation, and I had a question.
Is Polyploidy a mutation? It doesn't really state it here, but right under that heading is Mutation Frequency, so is there a connection?
Re: Genetic Mutation
I think it is, even if organism is normally polyploid (that happened during evolution) .For most plants it is normal but for animals often not good. I know that numerical chromosomal abberations can be polyploidy or aneuploidy(eg Down).
Polyploidy is not a mutation!
Polyploidy: The genomic state of having three or more sets of homologous chromosomes (for example, tetraploid organisms, which have four sets of chromosomes, ). Mutation: A change in the sequence of nucleotides of a gene. Some changes will alter the protein so that it no longer works normally, while other changes may have no effect. Also look here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/bv.fcgi?call=bv.View..ShowTOC&rid=iga.TOC&depth=10
"The second major type of chromosome mutation is change in chromosome number.... changes in chromosome number are usually clasified in 2 types-changes in whole chromosome sets and changes in parts of chromosome sets...Polyploids arise naturally as spontaneous chromosomal mutations and as such they must be considered aberrations because they differ from previous norm..." -An introducton to genetic analysis Griffiths ..7th e page556 Even here it's written "The next page looks at polyploidy, a type of mutation ...http://www.biology-online.org/2/8_mutations.htm look bottom and next page
Polyploidy is only a mutation when its not wild-type for the organism (eg. trisomy 21 in humans). Polyploidy is NOT a mutation when its wild-type (eg some wheat is hexaploidy). Sure, some polyploidy is a mutation, but not all.

Polyploidy is normal for plants. (It doesn't cause any harm.) But as much as I know it is a mutation.

Types of mutations:
"enic mutation-affects a single gene Chromozomial mutation-affects a chromozome Genomic mutation-affects the entire genome. Aneuploidy and polyploidy are types of genomic mutations.[...]{Aboult polyploidy:} While in plant kingdome these kinds of mutations are often benefical, in animals, in the vast majority of cases are not even compatibale with life"- Campbell textbook 3rd edition Ployploidy IS a mutation. Even my 9th grade textbook says so... In plants it may not be considered a mutation by some because it is inherited, it does not occur in the body of the individual. However, we have already ha this discussion "I have no intention of stopping anytime soon. I want to understand the universe and answer the big questions, that is what keeps me going" - Stephen Hawking
