what is this strange flower?????

Hello!
Please help us! :)

My boyfriend took a picture of this bizarre looking flower at the Thunder Bay Botanical Conservatory. We have no idea what it is called, but it's certainly not something that would grow in Northwestern Ontario...hahaha

It stems from foliage that looks much like that of a daylily...

I'm pretty sure that it's a kind of lily, but i'm not sure which kind :(

it looks like hawaiian awapuhi, a ginger-like plant. but im not sure.
i don't suffer from insanity, i enjoy every MINUTE OF IT.
