Forensic Biology/Forensic ScienceI was wondering what your opinion of Forensic Biology/Science is. I have heard a lot of things about it being 'not real science' etc due to the fact that people who have degrees such as biochemistry etc can do the job of the a forensic scientist. I am not personally taking it as a degree, I am doing Immunology and Toxicology, but most of my friends at University are doing Forensics, and following a discussion with one of our lecturers are now panicking that they won't be able to get a job at the end of it.
Well, what you generally see in the workplace is that people with specialized degrees may have a better chance of getting a job within their expertise, whereas those with broader degrees have a decent chance of getting a wider array of jobs.
Using myself as an example, my degree is Env. Studies. If I apply for a botany job, which I'm qualified for, and another person with a degree in Botany applies for it, they probably will have a better chance at getting it. So this is all to say that your Forensics friends will probably have a competitive edge in getting Forensics jobs, but won't be able to compete very well with microbio/biochem outside their niche.
