Difference between the top and the bottom of leafs

Postby strawberry_87 on Wed Feb 21, 2007 9:41 pm

We have an exam coming up in about two days and one of the question is how you can distinguish the upper side from the lower side of a leaf. I have looked in a lot of books and also on the net but can't find much. Would someone be able to help me, that would be great :)

Search for leaf structure diagrams. Stomata located on the bottom side, palisade cells are closer to the top side etc.

depends on the leaf... Pinus sp. leaves have no top and bottom

The top of the leaf is specialized to collect light, however in some plants such as those that live on water, the stomata has to be on top for gas exchange.
