hormones may cause a general attraction, but i don't think they would cause an attraction to a specific person, over another

I would venture to guess that this is one of those "not-well-understood" areas of the brain

It would be interesting to find out what exactly causes specific likes and dislikes

That's what commonly said as "chemical" :)

In birds, it involves the functional pineal body, which will process the visual signal from eyes. Shortly, this will lead to reproductive season.

In mammal, including human, pineal body is not developed well. So I still have no idea of this "chemical" :roll: :oops:

Some animals and some insects have this kind of hormone that would attract their mates. This hormone I think called pheromones?:)

Yap...human sex pheromone...bottle it and we (men) will make a great fortune...:lol:

Um, by the way, human also have sex pheromone isn't it? I think I've read that women usually secrete sex pheromone during ovulation period...
Q: Why are chemists great for solving problems?
A: They have all the solutions.

and also the men. One day my boyfriend usually complained of his odor (he thinks he smells bad)in a month. But when I tried to smell him... well he didn't smell bad and instead I like it.

@victor: The smell of women caused by aromatase. In their ovulation period, the estrogen level is the highest, in that time aromatase is plenty, because it is needed to convert androgen (testosteron) to estrogen. Their smell can be caused of that. BUT, it could be from something else, because in the period, women producing more sweat and (sorry) the blood things. If they don't clean their body well, so they produce bad smell. This is hygiene stuff :)

@hbeing: odor = body smell

And there is some connection between smell and differences in their genom. Had a lecture of this a couple of years ago...

Women smelled at t-shirt used by different men, and the researcher found out that they preferred the smell from the men that had hla-genes (MHC, the thing antigens are presented on) that was most different from their own.

(evolutionary good to increase the genetic variation...).
