I have to write an essay!

Postby pbstudent07 on Sat Nov 26, 2005 11:02 pm

Hey everyone, I soon have to complete an essay on carbohydrates. This wouldn't be a problem, BUT it has to be a 6 to 10 pager, and my book has only given me about 3.5 pages of notes, and so far, all of the internet sites has given me the same information that I already have. Can anyone recomend a good site to get more information off of? If so, I would really appriciate it. Thank You :wink:

What do you already know?
What is your thesis?
What more do you want to add in?

It's all about structure and presentation.

Well I know alot about the sugars, you know, monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides, but thats really all I am getting. I also have approx. 3 very detailed, very differently worded, deffinitions. I have begun with a very detailed definiton in my first paragraph (using all 3 definitions in combination). other than that I am completely stumped.

Well, you can discuss ways they're formed, ways they are used, a couple of examples for each, that should be plenty.

@Bio-hazzard
What are talking about? I don't have the slightest clue...

@pbstudent07
You can write a 100 page essay on carbs easily.
Here is an example: the roles of sugars:
-primary energy source(here you give the whole methabolical pathways complete with chemical reactions of cell respiration)
-components of DNA(role of DNA, it's chemical structure etc)
-part of cell structure. here you have:
-glycocalix(cell coat); clasifications(glicolipids, glicoproteins, proteoglucans)
-terminal glicozilation in RER; dolicol-phosphate
-role of antigenes(blood types)
-role in intracelullar comunication(manose sequence) and intercelular communication(part of neurotransmitter and neuromodulators receptors structure)
-compenents of cell wall(celulose at plants, GlucoseNAc and N-muramic acid in bacteria)
-cation deposits. usually sugars in glycocalix are acetilated or sulfated
-intercellular binding(mention selectines, binding of sperm cell to egg cell)

And that is only for the role of sugars in the body(AND THEY AR NOT ALL, only what i could think of now!!). Only that can cover 30-40 pages. If you give it synthesis(Calvin-Bensen cycle) and gluconeogenesis+the structure of various sugars, you got yourself a nice 50-70 page long paper.

Relax, Essays are quite fun; I can stretch one page of information into 2 pages or more. Essays aren't summaries of the book you know. Analyze what you have, write what you know-- but make sure you have a point for writing it-- and incorporate what you know not only of carbohydrates, but what you know of their bonding, physical as well as chemical properties, roles they play. I can go on forever and write a book on your question. Just relax and write.

you can talk about the atkins diet, too.

speaking of carbs, is it true that on the atkins diet instead of your body burning fat it eats away at the muscle? ive read that somewhere and i want to know if its true

The atkins diet is based on ketosys. It is very controversial and that is only one of the arguments doctors have against it...
