it's not needed to dilute the blood. You need 1 drop of blood on a film. Then you can stain them with Wright's stain. The standard method is then to spread out the blood in an angle of about 30 degrees across the film (diluting the bloodcellpopulation on the sides). Then you can search for specific bloodcells where the red bloodcells are just overlying each other (mostly on the sides of the film).
