Need a diagonsis

I thought it might be avian bird flu because she had contracted it in Thailand and it states that it is pretty recent (2008). However, the symptoms for bird flu don't include altered mental state. I also thought it might obviously be malaria, since it says she didn't take a vaccination for it. The symptoms match up the most with malaria but it says it was caused by a pathogen well-known in 2008. Malaria is a fairly "old" disease. So, could anyone help me make a diagnosis?
