UNCOUPLING PROTEINS

Postby uhna » Thu Aug 21, 2008 11:27 pm

Hi
I'm studying for my Human Physiology exam and currently on the topic of Energy Balance Homeostasis, in particular thermogenisis, I'm trying to learn more about uncoupling proteins and mitochondrial proton leaks, can any one tell me the basics as I have no idea where to begin?

thanks!

The information about thermogenesis are huge amount on internet. But if you don't know where to begin, I tell you. First you have to understand how NADH is produced. Then how they are oxidized in respiratory chain. Then how ATP is produced. In all of these stages are particular conditions under which whese processes occur or are inhibited. That is very important too. But first and foremost you have understand structure of mitochondria (not just to know matrix, inner and outer membranes, but also, for example, permeability of membranes to certain compounds and so on).
After that you will be able to learn about uncouplers, various poision of electron transfers etc.
If you have more particular questions I'll try to help.
