Plant breeding

Postby pinkypig on Tue Mar 18, 2008 3:38 pm

hi i wanted to know which mating system in a breeding program to improve crop plants would be used to produce a homozygous line in the shortest possible time? the 4 options would be out of :self-fertilization, brother-sister matings, first-cousin matings or random matings.

Draw some punnet squares for 2 trait varieties.

Self-pollination, unless you need to combine traits that are present only in different plants or have plants that cannot be self-fertilized.
