If I were you, which I realize I'm not I would stand up for myself. You should face them, and instead of fighting just talk to them. I know it's not as easy as it sounds, but I ended up becoming best friends with this girl that I hated just because I was one of the group of 20.

I personally believe you should always be willing to take a stand for yourself. Violence should be a last resort, but if it's an absolute necessity you should not be afraid to use it. I've been in situations where I drove off the "group of 20" simply by dropping only one of them. Once the rest of them saw that they had a fight on their hands, they withdrew. Apparently their bark was worse than their bite.
