The main characteristics

Postby victor on Fri Jun 10, 2005 1:38 pm

Hmm...I can't say for sure because the are many ways to classify organisms. Example, we can classify animals become vertebrates and invertebrates (from their backbone) then from invertebrates we can classify them into protozoans, poriferas, coelenteratas, vermes, arthropodes..etc (from their body structure)
Well, from the examples above we can see that there are many ways to classify organisms because they have some common thing between each other and eanble us to make a classification for them..

Like vitor said, it depends. If you are classifing bacteria or plants the characteristics will be different. Also, the characteristics will vary along with the detail you are clasifying something in

I think it is impossible to classify organisms based only on characteristics. I think they should be grouped more by genetic code similarities than anything.

Genetic material is one of the main characteristics

I thought he meant only physical ones.
