How did Gregory Mendel actually do selective breeding

I have been researching on Gregory Mendel, and i understand that he used pea plants and so on, and his history, but all text that i have read does not explain exactly how it was done.
I really need to know, and i have a vague idea that it was cross pollination, and that he took the pollen from one pea plant and inserted it into another.... but i am not sure....

Put a bag over the plant so it on,t be pollinated by wind and bees.
Take a brush to collect pollen from plant A transfer to plant B...

No need for a bag, Patrick. Pea plants are self-fertilizing . Pollination does not involve wind nor animals. What Gregor Mendel did was
1. rip off the stamina from plant A and B so they do not self-fertilize, and save the pollen separately
2. take a brush(as patrick said) and apply the pollen from plant A to plant B and vice-versa.

It is quite a big deal that peas self-fertilize: by letting them self-fertilize for a few generations mendel obtained his pure breeds.
