Could you identigy this alga?

Postby mattw on Sat Aug 25, 2007 4:53 pm

Here is a photo of an alga. can someone tell me what it is? Why does it have spirals of green? Are the green spirals one continuous chloroplast? Notice that the spirals converge at the center of the cell, where they wind more tightly, and presumably end. What do you think?

This is a southern michigan alga I found in the slow, shallow water of a ditch exposed to a lot of sun in the early summer.

The algae you were looking at was a green algae called Spirogyra.
For more information check out this link. There are a number of resources on the internet that can probably explain it better than me.

I hope this helps. :D
