Missing Link between Modern Apes & Humans Impossible?

Postby b_d_41501 on Thu Jun 02, 2005 6:43 pm

Why is the notion of a "missing link" between modern apes and humans inaccurate? Is it because Humans evolved from a common ancestor shared with modern apes, not from modern apes themselves?

It would be accurate if you viewed the missing link as the common ancestor.

missing link

Postby charles brough on Sat Jun 11, 2005 6:43 pm

interesting subject. A similar subject is whether or not it is possible for humans and chimps to mate. Is there a possiblitlty of a "liger" like between a lion and a tiger or a mule being a cross with a horse and a donkey? This is an old subject but not a very popular one! It was voiced several hundred years ago, I read. Also, I read in a very unreliable newspaper that it did happen in England but that it was kept hidden from the public. I had no faith in the source or the story, but there was a photo of the boy and, to my suprise, he did look like a "chimp-human." I think the whole subject is so unpopular because it raises the question as to whether he has a soul or not. Perhap, being half human, he would have only a half sole. . . :D

Religiously speaking it'll depend on the church...they might either say that God allowed it...or they might declare it an unholy union and do some thing about it(Van Helsing).

Biologically, there are many barriers to prevent this from happening. For one, the sperm cells would not recognize the egg cell and the egg cell would probably not allow the sperm to enter. Secondly, even if conception did occur, the offspring would very probably abort at an early stage. Thirdly...who would want to have sex with a chimp?
There's a couple more barriers I've not mentioned but I think you get the idea.

chimphumans

Then, you are saying there is more genetic difference between the chimp and we humans than between lions and tigers, donkeys and horses. I certainly agree that chimp females are unattractive---at least to me! I note, however, that urangatans are noted for trying to mate with humans.

Well, they're different species, I'd say we are quite genetically different from monkeys.

Under 1% genetically different though ;) But just that little bit can "put us over the top" so to speak

Exactly, the small difference, and it is very very small, between apes and ourselves ended up in us coming out on top instead of having a real-life Planet of the Apes.

Wouldn't it be cool to know if it actually would've been that way?
