Vision is the perception of light. Insects perceive light through three classes of sensory organs. Most adult insects have a single pair of compound eyes. Larvae of hemimetabolous insects and most adults have usually three simple eyes called ocelli. These are typically located on the dorsum of the head capsule, and they are sometimes called dorsal ocelli. Larvae of holometabolous insects do not have compound eyes.
