Thus, based on these data, it is clear that the maintenance of gene conversion levels resulting in a 144 hour thymidine treatment may be due to the overall stalling in cell replication and an eventual entry into the senescent state. On the contrary, the wash out protocol at 48 hours was able to prevent this senescence transition followed by a reversal of the cell replication and division effects, and thus, may be a useful tool to increase and sustain high levels of gene repair.
